Like other fields, the field of gaming technology, too, is filled up to the brim with misconceptions. A lot of people believe the origins of touch-controlled gaming to have been in the last decade. However, they couldn’t be more wrong. The birth of touch-controlled gaming goes all the way back to the early 1980s. As we witnessed further developments in gaming technology, a simple game of Snake wasn’t the pinnacle of gaming anymore. As touch-receptive games and touch-controlled technology started to make their mark in the field, people were now able to enjoy a wide variety of beautiful games with awesome gameplay. Not only were such games simplistic in nature, but they were also a boon for the average Joe who just wanted a means for letting off steam.

Notable Touch-Controlled Gaming Technology

There is no shortage of noteworthy technologies that have assisted in the development of touch-controlled gaming technologies. However, there have only been a few amongst them who have been able to shape up touch-controlled gaming technology into what it is today:

  1. Sega Systems – Sega can be accredited for being the first at attempting to introduce touch-controlled gaming technology. It all goes back to 1985 when Sega first unveiled the Sega Graphic Board, a tablet which was capable of being interacted with a stylus pen.

  1. Arcade Gaming – Even though Sega was making its best attempts to popularize and revolutionize touch-controlled gaming technology, there was still a significant amount of time before it could become mainstream. Japanese arcade games, however, have been implementing touch controls way before during the times of the early 2000s. The arcade games implemented touch-controlled technology for a wide variety of games such as real-time games, strategy games, etc. However, these games weren’t a lot popular outside Asia.

  1. The Nintendo DS – It was only when the Nintendo DS came that we felt a revolution bubbling in the field of touch-controlled gaming. The popular console featured a pressure-sensitive touchscreen that was a major hardware innovation. Moreover, the console provided players with the option to rely completely on touch-controlled options or to integrate touch-controlled hardware options with traditional physical controls.

  1. iDevices – The most recent changes that took the world of touch-controlled gaming with a storm came out when Apple came out with the iPhone, iPod, and the iPad. Equipped with a capacitative touchscreen, these devices could measure the electrical current in the human fingers upon interaction to provide extremely accurate human fingerprint detection. It was due to such a technology that ultimately paved the path for the games that we are able to experience today.

There remain no doubts in our minds that touch-controlled gaming has taken the world by a storm. However, this does not change the fact that such gaming technologies still require a multitude of innovation to solve the numerous existing problems. The primary of this would be the fact that a touchscreen requires constant interaction with the finger. Secondly, the technology needs to process games faster. With the up-and-coming resource-intensive games of today, it becomes hard for the human brain to figure out whether an input has been registered in the game.
