Video games lend themselves completely to 3D

What Is 3D Gaming?

Gaming as we all know by now has encompassed a large area of our lives from different aspects. It will serve our best purpose if we begin by defining the concept of 3D gaming because it will go all the way to clear the path to the understanding of this topic under discussion. We are to say it in the lay man’s language that everyone will understand; 3D simply means an interactive computer entertainment that people derive pleasure from and this is presented in a graphical format. This presentation takes three forms and that is where the term 3D generated from.

The three graphical formats of dimensions include:

  • Height
  • Width
  • Depth

In The Beginning

The first of these games that are now growing in popularity among the old and young players were developed from wireframe models. It was then made through the combination of vertices and lines and it required no shading as then; Elite was the pioneer among the games then. There was a shift in the year 1984 with the arrival of 3D polygons with 16 colors that is flat shaded.

The graphics of the games as at this point in its early development were poor when placed side by side what is obtained with the 2D presentation.

The Improvements Along The Line

We mentioned the poor quality that was the lot of 3D in the beginning, there was a bold attempt to improve on this and it came up in the year 1992 with the release of Wolfenstein 3D by ID software.

It was however regarded as 2.5D or pseudo 3D in some quarters, however, the fact remains that it marked a turning point in the development of 3D. This is regarded as the premier graphics engine marker.

The Breakthrough

After going through some metamorphosis which we have tried to describe from the beginning above, there came the time for a breakthrough for 3D and this happened with the entry of Quake into the market.

It came out with full-colored text models and excellent particles along with brilliant sound effects. It can be played without any additional hardware. The performance of quake was boosted by 3D-accelerated video cards and a daughter board from S3 Graphics.

The Explosion

We have taken time to explain the definition and followed it up with the journey of 3D from its very beginning up until now. We can tell you at this juncture that the entry of Quake into the market marked the beginning of the explosion in 3D gaming. There has been a remarkable rise and rise in this direction and it can be said today that 3D has completely taken over the reins in video gaming.

The models in gaming that we see around today are surfaced by color, specula glow as well as reflective maps. It can be said without any fear of contradiction that 3D has completely taken over the reins in today’s video gaming entertainment. The influence will continue to grow in leaps and bounds.
